Portable containers — IBC and GRV
We sit on the NFPA 30 and UL 2368 technical committees. We specialise in matters relating to portable containers:
- Plastic and metal drums
- Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC), known in French as GRV
The IBC is the most common case and the most often mishandled. A thousand-litre plastic container behaves very differently in a fire from a two-hundred-litre steel drum: it loses its envelope early, releases its load at once, and containment then becomes the single device deciding the scale of the loss.
NFPA 30 and the French regulatory frame
NFPA 30 (Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code) is the underlying standard. It governs distances, ventilation, containment and the adequacy of extinguishing means according to liquid class and storage mode.
In France, the ICPE frame tightened after Lubrizol. Post-Lubrizol requirements bear in particular on genuinely knowing which products are stored, on the condition of containment systems, and on being able to demonstrate, file in hand, what a building contains at a given moment.
